  • [es-pree de less-ka/-iay] (idiom) A witty remark that occurs to you too late, literally on the way down the stairs. The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations defines esprit de l'escalier as, "An untranslatable phrase, the meaning of which is that one only thinks on one's way downstairs of the smart retort one might have made in the drawing room."

On a Wednesday

Today started in darkness, as usual, and an extra long commute due to an accident. Which was great. I really miss Abby Ryan's morning traffic report. It was always thorough and every ten minutes. I can't find anything regular on the radio so every time I get stopped, I just stew and get angry. Not great. But, I was awarded a beautiful sky when I pulled into the parking lot. I am very glad I picked up some film yesterday.

The first photo is from 8am this morning, the building where I spend Mondays and Wednesdays is silhouetted. The next is my first polaroid self portrait! I finally figured out how to do it with my Spectra. The third is a secret nook/garden roof outside of the architecture library. It's neat. Looks like it's designed by Dr. Suess. I added the photos to the On A Wednesday flickr pool.

On a Wednesday

This Wednesday morning was spent hanging out of second story windows, cleaning them inside and out. The afternoon consisted of moving mulch from a large pile in the driveway, up a hill and spreading it around. I would have preferred to be in the park next to the Art Institute, having an extended picnic lunch with my old work buddies. Oh well. Pictures from that park below, from my first roll of film with my holga. More holga shots here.

I'm in the middle of writing a post for New Critics on a most excellent book. It's a three for one, one volume with three novels, entitled Berlin Noir. I'll link when it's up.

Here's an extra photo, because I think the colors are wild. The tulips are from a flower shop around the corner from my old apartment.

I got a holga a while back and finally got the guts to play around with it. Since it's medium format film, it takes two weeks to get processed, and the prints came back right around when my internet went out and my apartment was covered in boxes. I have some color shots that I'll be sharing later.

I dug the prints out of a box last night so I could post a couple of shots to the On a Wednesday Flickr pool. The photos are better larger, so click on them to see them bigger.

The first two photos are from my old street, in the morning. The last is from the Chicago Botanic Garden.
